Despite the efforts exerted by Lebanese local
authorities, the environmental situation deteriorated significantly in the past
years. The massive influx of Syrian refugees since 2011 has raised the energy
pressure and increased soil and air pollution and waste production. The municipalities
are the first to be affected by these changes. They lack the resources to meet
the demographic challenges and the environmental degradation. The lack of
human, technical and financial resources is undermining Lebanese local
authorities’ attempts at implementing environmental public policies and
developing environmental projects through the use of renewable energy.
